First Formal Meeting with Nation’s New Prime Minister – Tonga
24 January 2025Over the weekend the first tropical cyclone of 2025, Tropical Cyclone (TC) Pita, developed and posed a potential threat to two Pacific nations: the Cook Islands and Niue. PCRIC’s monitoring systems detected the Category 1 cyclone as it moved north of Tonga, over Niue, and toward the Cook Islands.
The cyclone passed through the outer-insured area covered by the Cook Islands’ policy with PCRIC, but its wind speed was too low to trigger the policy payout mechanism. Likewise for Niue, TC Pita moved directly over the county’s main island and Beveridge Reef, having an impact in insured areas but insufficient to activate the payout mechanism.
This event served as an effective test of PCRIC’s monitoring systems. In line with the policy terms, a formal calculation report will be produced by PCRIC’s Calculation Agent and shared with the government officials for both the Pacific nations in due course, further strengthening preparedness for future events.
