PCRIC’s Pacific Regional DRF Workshop An Essential Element to Ongoing Regional Capacity Building
12 February 2026
Reshaping Risk into Resilience
18 February 2026PCRIC recently conducted a short mission to the Republic of the Marshall Islands to continue dialogue on the development of a tailored drought policy for the nation, work made possible thanks to the support of New Zealand’s Climate Finance Capacity Support Programme.
A technical workshop convened with staff from the Ministry of Finance, National Disaster Management Office, Majuro Weather Service, and Ministry of Transport provided valuable insights on the technical aspects of drought policy design and how it could be customised to meet RMI’s specific needs.
The National Disaster Council (NDC) welcomed the presentation of key policy options, which feature a three-tiered rainfall deficit trigger system—Short-term Preparedness, Early Response, and Extended Early Response. Noting the merits of appropriate coverage, NDC expressed support for government adoption of a policy.
PCRIC confirmed availability of premium finance assistance through its grant agreement with GSSP and will provide technical support throughout the Cabinet submission process. Next steps include finalising policy parameters and preparing Cabinet documentation.
This mission reflects PCRIC’s commitment to pre-arranged finance as a mechanism for strengthening disaster resilience across the Pacific.
