Pre-arranged Protection Delivers Practical Payout in Tonga
9 April 2026PCRIC progressed its strategic engagement with the Solomon Islands via a recent briefing session with senior government officials in Honiara. Priority considerations included updates on active coverage across tropical cyclone, excess rainfall, earthquake and tsunami risk for the country, and the awarding of a scholarship for a Solomon Islands student to undertake study in DRF at the USP campus in Suva.
In-country, PCRIC advanced dialogue with targeted state-owned enterprises to strengthen understanding of how parametric instruments can provide protection against the financial impact of disasters on critical national assets, infrastructure and services. Meetings were conducted with representatives of the Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Company, Solomon Power, and the Solomon Islands Ports Authority.
The mission was an opportunity to officially introduce, Ms. Kayleen Fanega, to the Ministry of Finance and Treasury Permanent Secretary as Solomon Islands’ National DRF Adviser. In this role, she will work alongside national counterparts to strengthen disaster risk understanding by implementing the DRF Strategy and the ongoing effort in refinement of DRF policy frameworks.
Ms. Fanega’s appointment marks a decisive move in PCRIC’s strategic commitment to strengthening local DRF capacity throughout the region. Part of the initial cohort, she is one of several recently inducted appointees destined to be part of a regional network of locally based specialist advisers embedded within the Climate and Disaster Risk Finance infrastructure of Pacific Island national governments.
