PICs are highly exposed to adverse natural events, including tropical cyclones, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis which can result in disasters affecting their entire economic, human, and physical environment.

To date, four payouts have been made for an aggregate amount of more than US$11 million. Two were made under PCRAFI (TC Ian, 2014, Tonga, $1.27m & TC Pam, 2015, Vanuatu, $1.9m) The other half were made by PCRIC (TC Gita, 2018, Tonga, $3.5m & TC Harold, 2020, Tonga, $4.5m) These payouts, all received immediately post-disaster(s), were the first financial injections of emergency funds made into each country.

PCRIC Meets with Tonga’s NEMO Team and Stakeholders

Last week, at the request of the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) and on behalf of the Kingdom of Tonga, the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) convened a group of stakeholders to consult regarding the parametric drought insurance product which is being developed by PCRIC with the support of the global risk advisory company, Willis Towers Watson (WTW).

The Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) CEO, Mr. Aholotu Palu recently announced that in December 2021, PCRIC received a Christmas gift of €10 million in premium financing from Germany via the World Bank.

PCRIC Welcomes the World Bank Implementation Support Mission

The Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) recently welcomed a visiting mission team from the World Bank to Fiji. With the confirmation that the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Assessment and Financing Initiative (PCRAFI) project would cease with effect by the end of 2022, which directly supported the establishment and operation of PCRIC, the World Bank team’s agenda was to assess the performance of the company prior to its formal closure.
