During the recent 80th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) held in Bangkok, Mr. Aholotu Palu, the PCRIC CEO, delivered a virtual intervention. In his address, he emphasised the critical role of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable development. He underscored the necessity for collective action beyond mere rhetoric, stressing the imperative of tangible progress towards shared goals.
Mr. Palu highlighted the widespread acknowledgment of sustainable development’s paramount importance in the Blue Pacific Continent, alongside the devastating impact of climate-related disasters on regional and national economic and social well-being. He noted that without robust adaptation strategies and effective coordination mechanisms, climate change risks will further exacerbate poverty and hinder sustainable development efforts.
Turning to the need for proactive measures, Mr. Palu reiterated the importance of preparedness in climate and disaster risk management. This involves enhancing coordination to bolster a country’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to disasters, thereby embodying resilience.
Looking ahead, he outlined key actions to be implemented. These include enhancing regional awareness of climate and disaster risk finance’s significance, fostering partnerships with relevant organisations to optimise resources, prioritising the utilisation of existing mechanisms over creating new ones, and continuing to invest in human capital to address skill gaps and facilitate transitions to more sustainable employment opportunities.
