As a side event during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, the PCRIC CEO, Mr. Aholotu Palu, participated in a panel discussion organised by SPREP’s Pacific Climate Change Centre (PCCC). The PCCC is a regional centre for climate change information, research and innovation. The panel included the Tongan Minister of Finance, the Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti and the Acting Director of the Tonga Meteorological Service, Mr. Laitia Fifita.
In his remarks, Mr. Palu highlighted the need for climate finance to be readily available, accessible, and affordable. He also touched upon the importance for the PCCC to collaborate with risk pool entities such as PCRIC, contributing to the enhancement of existing policies and linking them to financial protection against disasters caused by climate change. Such collaboration could extend to provision of appropriate adaptation education to Pacific people, assisting in the change of mindsets to a more pre-emptive and proactive stance.
In the days ahead, PCRIC will explore the possibility of hosting a joint event with SPREP during the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October and COP 29 in November.
