Shoko Takemoto

Shoko is an urban planner by training, and passionate about enhancing resilience and sustainability through better use of data, finance, and nature-based solutions. She is currently based in Tokyo, Japan, working on data-driven sustainable city development.
Until 2021, Shoko worked for the World Bank as a Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Specialist at the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery’s Tokyo DRM Hub, managing a trust fund program financed by the Ministry of Finance, Japan. From 2013 – 2017, she was based in Suva, Fiji with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) supporting Pacific Island countries and communities to design and implement climate and disaster resilient development initiatives under the Global Environment Fund and the Green Climate Fund, etc. Prior to Fiji, she was based in Accra, Ghana working for UNDP’s Climate and Environment team.
Her areas of specialization include environmental policy and planning, climate change adaptation, integrated water resource management, DRM, disaster risk finance and insurance, and urban analytics. Shoko is a Japanese national and holds a Master’s degree in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Bachelor of Arts from Macalester College.
